Melissa and its effects on sleep and general well-being.

Melissa officinalis, otherwise known as lemon balm, has been used for centuries in a variety of applications. Melissa is not related to lemon, but the oil in its leaves gives off a strong and powerful lemon scent when rubbed or touched. When you smell a lemon-like fragrance in your perfume, there's a good chance it's lemon balm and not real lemon, which is a bit more crisp than the aromatic, deep and unmistakable scent of lemon balm. In the Middle Ages, surgeons and physicians prescribed the plant to patients suffering from a number of ailments or requiring surgery, often mixing it with alcohol to enhance its effects, especially in cases, where surgery was required without the comfort of modern anesthetics.

When I first tried the highly concentrated lemon balm extract (a much stronger version than regular tea) it turned out to be a much cleaner version of relaxation than what some people find when using THC - there was no "unpleasant" feeling, no paranoia, no uncontrollable bursts of laughter or rage. It is not without a reason that the first ingredient that came to my mind while working on FemiCanna Sleep was lemon balm - the combination of ecological CO2 extract from Melissa with CBD and CBN turned out to be a hit - it should only be mentioned that the effect is so strong that the only optimal time for use is in the evening, an hour or two before bedtime.

Stress and anxiety?

We live in a busy world, constantly at full speed, and our stress and anxiety levels are often excessive. This results in increased levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and throws our bodies out of balance. Melissa is well known for its anti-anxiety and relaxation/stress reducing properties. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Melissa naturally increases levels of the neurotransmitter GABA by inhibiting the enzyme GABA transaminase. This has positive effects on overall mood, including reduced anxiety. Melissa also contains rosemary acid, which has antidepressant effects. Throw in broad spectrum CBD hemp oil (without THC) to the above and you have a natural and effective anti-anxiety and stress reliever.

Problems with falling asleep, insomnia?

Difficulty falling asleep or insomnia? Melissa also helps with insomnia and other sleep-related problems. One study looked at peri-menopausal women who struggled with sleep disturbances and found a significant difference in reduced levels of sleep disturbances in the experimental group compared to the placebo group. Another study looked at people with mild to moderate anxiety and sleep disorders and found that herbs such as lemon balm are an excellent alternative to prescription sleep aids. By combining the effects of lemon balm with cannabinoids such as CBD and CBN, which have also been shown to promote healthy sleep patterns, we get a formula that is ideal for those struggling with insomnia and the like.
